Be part of history as we unveil the newly digitized Chicago City Council Audio Archives. From Mayor Richard J. Daley to Michael A. Bilandic, Jane Byrne, Harold Washington, and beyond, these recordings capture some of the most spirited and defining moments in Chicago government.
Beginning in 1970, City Council meetings were recorded on audiotape and preserved by the Office of the City Clerk. After brief transitions to compact disc and later livestreaming video, these decades of recordings have now been fully digitized for the first time in 2025.
Join us to hear the voices, debates, and decisions that shaped Chicago’s history — and to see how this ambitious archival project preserves the city’s civic legacy for generations to come.
The preservation of these records was made possible through a 2024 grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) awarded to the Office of the City Clerk.

Chicago historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas became a social media sensation by sharing 60-second videos on Chicago’s history and culture. Dilla, a lifelong resident of the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood, graduated from Eastern Illinois University and is the founder of Chicago Mahogany Tours, taking people on bus tours to the historic neighborhoods of the South and West Sides of Chicago.
