The Midwest has a moonshot moment for climate leadership – and to realize it, we need to accelerate the pace of water innovation. Home to one-fifth of the world’s fresh water, the Great Lakes region has the opportunity to lead the world in solving water challenges, from PFAS contamination to recovering nutrients, critical materials, and energy. Great Lakes ReNEW – a six-state, bipartisan coalition based in Chicago – has won a historic investment of up to $160M over the next 10 years from the National Science Foundation to turn water “waste into wealth.”

Join Alaina Harkness, executive director of Chicago-based Current and CEO and principal investigator (PI) of Great Lakes ReNEW and Junhong Chen, co-PI, Crown Family Professor of Molecular Engineering in the UChicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and Lead Water Strategist at Argonne National Laboratory, for a discussion on the future of water innovation. Their conversation will be moderated by Michael Hawthorne of the Chicago Tribune.
